Visiting in Zagreb: Tips for the Old Town

If you don’t have much time for holidays, Zagreb is a good destination with great holiday spirit. The city center is quite compact and can be walked around in one day and if you have two days it is possible to see a little more of the city. If the legs are particularly tired, the tram lines go conveniently throughout the city center area. Zagreb is also known for its large number of museums. We are not much of a museum people with M, but we visited at the Museum of Broken Relationships. In its diversity, the museum was truly worth to visit and the visit triggered both amusement and anxiety. The museum is also located in the very heart of the old city.

Hungry travelers should head towards Tkalčićeva Street, which is located conveniently right next to the Old Town. You can find there variety of dining places and pubs. Selection varies from fine dining to basic pizzerias. Because of the location and popularity, the price level is, of course, a bit higher than what could be found elsewhere. Also, prepare for a large number of other hungry tourists. There are still places worth trying and for those who are too hungry to look any further, it is a relief. You can reach the Old Town by a funicular wagon, walking up the stairs, or going around, which is a little further. From the top of the hill there is quite nice scenery of the city.

During the summer, there are many street musicians, who are performing nearby restaurants. It is hard to pass by without stopping to enjoy the music on these beautiful streets. Now, when we live here, it is easy to find us going out more often to enjoy a glass of wine and relax even during weekdays. That definitely didn’t happen too often in Finland. Here, there is a lot more choices, and everything is so close. In the summer, what we really enjoy are evenings with the temperature dropping from 35 Celsius to enjoyable 22 – 28 degrees. During midday's it’s better to hide in air conditioned places.

Our favorite eating and drinking spots in the Old Town (or nearby):

Otto & Frank

Located in the beginning of Tkalčićeva Street. Offers delicious comfort food and also great breakfast. We have tried burgers and their signature breakfast menu. Both gets our vote.

Submarine

Best burger place so far! We are both agreed on recommending this place. There are two places where you can find this restaurant however, the one located on Frankopaska Street, which is a bit smaller and cozier. My favorite burger is Italian and M has voted Smokehouse to his favorite. You might also try their burger tasting menu, which contains three different mini burgers. I give extra credit for their organic wines (although they are also more pricey, 22 kuna for 1dl).

Basement - wine bar

If you are craving to taste different kinds of local wines, you should be heading here! Service is absolutely terrific and there is also option for cheese platters, which all look tasty.
