Following wine in Slovenia

Last week, we celebrated our first wedding anniversary and on that occasion we decided to go on a last minute weekend trip. Our current location here in Zagreb gives us a lot of possibilities for short distance trips, which aren’t too heavy on our already small budget, which limits possibilities regarding the content and location. I have heard a lot of praise about the beauty of Slovenia and I was responsible for organizing the trip, so with a two-week notice I booked us an Airbnb room and made travel plans. Our main problem was our two cats for whom we weren’t able to find a pet sitter with such a short notice. Luckily our cats don’t mind traveling and the Airbnb host accepts pets, so we celebrated wedding anniversary with our cats.

With limited accommodation options during the busiest tourist season, we ended up far away from the tourist traps and booked a wonderful place in a small vineyard in the Nova Gorica area. Oh, the nature was so beautiful and the spirit of the region could be described as idyllic! The trip from Zagreb lasted approximately three hours by car and the place was easy to find. Stefan, our host at the Stanfel's, cooked us a delicious four-course dinner that also included his homemade wines. He produces Chardonnay, Merlot, and two different kinds of sparkling wine. In the morning we enjoyed homemade jams (fig jam <3) and fresh bread. If we had couple more days, we would have definitely visited Italian side, which was only about 10 km away.

Despite our tight schedule (and we are rather brisk travelers), we made a day trip to the popular Lake Bled. The lake is incredibly beautiful, and even though I've seen the pictures before, it nevertheless enchanted us. In the middle of the lake there is a small island with a church on it, which really makes the view a perfect "postcard landscape". We walked up to the Bled Castle to enjoy this magnificent view and if we had enough time, we would have been happy to swim in the lake to cool off. However, the time was limited and there was a couple hour drive back, so after quick visit, we decided to head back to our region. Ride back was certainly not boring, because the landscapes are truly b-r-e-a-t-h-t-a-k-i-n-g. We can definitely recommend renting a car to see more of Slovenia.

In the afternoon we decided to pop into the nearby villages and certainly cutest and the most charming was Šmartno, which can be circled within 15 minutes by foot. Despite its size the village is full of wonderful atmosphere and it is difficult to find prettier place (and scenery!) to live in. We also visited Dobrovo village, which was only few minutes away by car. In Dobrovo, we went to Dobrovo Castle, where Goriška Brda Wine Cellar is located. We couldn’t have resisted buying local red wine and my favorite, white wine from there. It is worth mentioning that Slovenian specialty Rebula grapes were used to make my souvenir wine.

We had a lot of expectations from Slovenia and the country definitely delivered. We would gladly visit Slovenia again ^_^!
